Your wedding invitations do more than share the details of your big day. They give guests a first look at your celebration and help them plan ahead.

But when should you actually mail them? Here's a quick guide to getting the timing right!

When to Mail Wedding Invitations

For most weddings, we recommend mailing invitations 8 weeks before your wedding date.

However, certain circumstances may require a little extra notice:

  • Destination Weddings: Approximately 12 weeks before the wedding.

  • International Guests: 8 to 12 weeks in advance, depending on travel requirements.

  • No Save the Dates: 8 to 12 weeks before the wedding to give guests additional time to plan.

Save the dates are typically mailed 6 to 9 months before the wedding, especially when guests will need to travel.

When to Order Your Invitations

We recommend beginning the invitation design and ordering process 4 to 5 months before your wedding.

This allows plenty of time to finalize your design, review proofs, receive your stationery, and assemble everything without feeling rushed.

Before You Drop Them in the Mail

A few important reminders:

  • Proofread everything. Double-check names, dates, times, locations, and website links.

  • Order extras. Keep a few additional invitations for unexpected guests, addressing mistakes, and photography.

  • Check postage. Take a fully assembled invitation to the post office to confirm the correct postage before purchasing stamps.

  • Set your RSVP deadline. Your deadline should reflect your style of food service. Always confirm your caterer's final count requirements before setting your deadline.

    • For seated dinners with individual meal selections, we recommend RSVPs be due 30 days before the wedding.

    • For receptions featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres, 21 days before the wedding is generally sufficient.

  • Include your wedding website. It's the perfect place to share accommodations, transportation details, and registry information.

One Last Tip From Your Wedding Planner

Beautiful invitations are wonderful, but clear communication and thoughtful timing are just as important!

At Balazs Events, we encourage couples to plan ahead, stay organized, and give their guests plenty of time to prepare. A little planning now makes for a much smoother experience as your wedding day approaches.
